Each year, International Women’s Day reminds us of the ongoing global effort to advance equality, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls everywhere. This year’s commemoration arrives at a pivotal political moment, placing justice at the center of international dialogue. It also coincides with the opening of the world’s largest annual forum on gender equality at the United Nations—the Commission on the Status of Women (9–19 March).

The official celebration will bring together influential voices advocating for women’s rights and justice. Among them is Academy Award–winning actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Anne Hathaway, who will headline the event. The program will also feature a special musical performance by Grammy Award–winning artist and Broadway star Michelle Williams.

On a personal note, the passing of my mother in 2016 inspired me to begin a portrait series dedicated to women who, like myself, came to New York in search of a new life. My mother was the pillar of our family—a woman whose tireless work, love, and dedication quietly shaped the world around her. Everything she did was guided by a deep desire to make life better for others.

The women portrayed in this series come from every corner of the world. Each shared her story through interviews, revealing journeys of courage, resilience, and hope. Though their paths were different, they were united by a common aspiration—to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Their message is simple yet powerful:“We are women of New York. We are women of the world, celebrating our diversity through our common humanity.”

It is my hope to continue this project here in Hudson, highlighting remarkable women whose contributions—large or small—help shape a more compassionate and equitable world.
