Louise at Eighty: A Celebration of Life and Enduring Friendship

Today, as Louise celebrates her 80th birthday, I find myself reflecting with gratitude on the extraordinary friendship we have shared for more than three decades. Since our paths first crossed at the United Nations in 1989, we have journeyed through many chapters of life. Time has brought change, unexpected turns, joys and challenges, yet our friendship has remained steadfast through it all.

Louise played an especially meaningful role in my life when my marriage came to an end. In 2009, as I prepared to return to work at the United Nations, I faced an uncertain new beginning and the difficult task of finding a home in New York. Then Louise wrote to tell me that her apartment in Tudor City was available. “All you need,” she said, “are your clothes and a toothbrush.”

With that simple yet profoundly generous gesture, Louise gave me far more than a place to live. She offered me security, comfort and, most importantly, the opportunity to rebuild my life. The rest, as they say, is history.

When I had left the United Nations in 1992 to begin my married life, Louise’s youngest daughter, Céline, was still a baby. Louise and her late husband, Gilles, took me to lunch to celebrate the new journey that lay ahead. Little could any of us have imagined that, seventeen years later, I would return to New York and make my home in that charming little “shoebox” in Tudor City.

Although modest in size, the apartment became a place overflowing with life, laughter and friendship. Many joyful gatherings of the Life & Friendship Club were held within its walls, creating memories that remain deeply precious to me. It became much more than an apartment: it was a welcoming haven and the setting for an important new chapter in my life.

Louise possesses a rare capacity for thoughtful analysis and honest introspection. She understands both the rational and emotional dimensions of life and has the wisdom to hold them in balance. Her generosity comes naturally from the heart and can be felt in everything she does.

Today, Louise turns eighty—a remarkable milestone worthy of joyful celebration. She enters this new decade with the same exceptional energy, keen intelligence and boundless curiosity that have always defined her. Her appetite for life remains as strong as ever, inspiring her to welcome each new experience and adventure with enthusiasm.

Through the passing years, the distances between us and the many chapters we have shared, Louise’s friendship has remained one of the great constants of my life. On her 80th birthday, I celebrate not only the remarkable woman she is, but also the lasting gift of her friendship—a beautiful reminder that true friendship transcends time, distance and change.
