Meeting His Excellency Ambassador Nabil Mekky, the Consul General of Egypt in Montreal, along with his wife, and Professor Ahmed Gaber, the new Cultural Attaché and Director of the Egyptian Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs in Canada, was a profound pleasure. Their warm presence instantly transported me back to the vibrant atmosphere of Egypt—a sensation I first experienced in 2004 when I was invited to create a photographic series capturing the essence of the country.
That 2004 journey, organized by the Egyptian Tourist Office in Montreal to commemorate fifty years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Egypt, ignited a transformative chapter in my artistic career. It inspired the inception of a Cultural Exchange project that led me through the Middle East and North Africa, including Syria, Jordan, Jerusalem, Tunisia, and Algeria.
Driven by a desire to bridge the widening gap between Western and Arab cultures, my work evolved into an artistic "archaeology"—a visual exploration uncovering the layered histories and rich cultures of civilizations often overshadowed in political discourse. Through my lens, I aimed to highlight our shared humanity, emphasizing commonalities amidst our diverse cultural tapestries.
My artwork serves as a testament to the depth and beauty of diverse civilizations, drawing attention to both the uniqueness of our individual cultures and the universal threads that bind us together.
